In this episode of 10th Magnitude’s “Manhattans Project” Corey Wagehoft stops by to discuss Azure Resource Manager and Chef, and the benefits of creating a delivery environments with Azure. How can you seamlessly create a delivery infrastructure with these resources? What sort of limitations exist now, and how are they being overcome as the technology develops?
Let’s find out! Here are some highlights from our chat:
Michael: In our last episode, there was conversation about how ARM helps with clarity in usage and billing thanks to its configuration utilities. Does Chef empower that? Does Chef enable that? Or does it focus elsewhere?
Corey: Well, Chef is definitely more about implementation. It’s designed so that once you have the initial infrastructure automation in place, Chef picks up the ball from there and goes further. It actually does all the fine grain infrastructure tuning. More like installing all the different packages you need and the configurations requested. There is a utility called Chef Analytics that will give you some reporting back about how your servers are finalized and configured, and that’s beneficial, but it doesn’t tie directly into Azure Resource Manager.
Michael: So what sort of project implementation are you seeing joining the two?
Corey: In my current assignment, we are doing a very large scale deployment where the specific needs are more or less to deploy an automated environment from end to end. Their ultimate goal is through Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery, once the automation is tested and passes and everything looks perfect, that their deploy system can then start to process with Azure Resource Manager to start this infrastructure in the configuration that they need for their customers. Chef will then pick up from there and configure everything. It’ll put their application in place for them. So the goal is they just push a button, and their entire architecture is in place.
