Data Gravity: Move the Apps to the Data — Not the Other Way ‘Round

  1. I agree that data mobility is a huge problem. Big Data solutions, by definition, require the interconnection of many data sources, and the application of complex processing to achieve its aims. Moving large and complex data sets is impractical given the current cost and time to do so. So also absolutely agree that data gravity is a concept we need to grasp and find solutions for. I would question, though, your statement that sensitive data needs to be stored on-premise, behind your own firewalls; that on-premise necessarily means better protected. If you are running solutions on an IaaS or PaaS platform, the security definitions will be yours, but on a much more resilient and protected environment. So still better to ‘cloud’ it than to run it yourself.
